Stories shape the way we understand ourselves, our communities, and our future. They preserve culture, challenge injustice, inspire empathy, and connect us across generations. Yet for many communities navigating conflict, displacement, inequality, or rapid social change, storytelling has too often centered on what has been lost rather than what remains possible.

In May 1979, David Bowie opened Lodger, the closing chapter of the trilogy he began in Berlin with Low and “Heroes”. “Fantastic Voyage” drifts in on piano and a small orchestra of mandolins, played by producer Tony Visconti. It preserves a gentle vibration in its tone, an almost quaint sensation. It is one of the most quietly political songs Bowie has ever recorded.

With the expansion of award categories at the Golden Globes and the Emmys, it seems that all forms of content – even podcasters – now have a forum to showcase their best and brightest. Still, one group of storytellers remains unrepresented on the star-studded red carpet: policymakers.

Stories are all around us. Every person you cross paths with has their stories–what defines, inspires and shapes their realities. Nonprofits touch countless people, each with their own, individual stories. When organizations take the time to share stories of the real people they’re empowering, it inspires action.

After the 2008 financial crisis, I became interested in alternative business models that considered more than profit when making decisions. Shared value, in particular, piqued my interest. Through my years collaborating with Docutribe, I have come to understand that stories are the drivers of change in every sector and walk of life.

Docutribe recently attended the CAMP Film + Fest in Austin, TX—a two-day film festival hosted by Creator Camp—creating a space for filmmakers, predominantly from Gen Z, and fans to share their creative work, learn from each other and discuss the future of film beyond Hollywood. 

At Docutribe, we believe that stories are more than entertainment—they are the foundation of human connection, a means of understanding, and a catalyst for social change.
