CHOKE

Following the lives of a group of activists through their challenges and triumphs of their lives in the current political climate, CHOKE provides an immersive portrait of a life inside the struggle in powerful vignettes.

Activism takes a serious toll. Not just from an external standpoint – i.e. putting your body on the line for the work – but from an internal standpoint as well. Many activists, who are often seen ‘fighting the good fight’ on social media and television, continue to suffer from burnout, anxiety, and depression as a result of their work.

The last decade has seen an incredible time of tumult in the United States, and while it has emboldened some, it has left others listless and discouraged. CHOKE will provide a window into the lives of the activists and how the state of the country has impacted their lives. Told in the first person, we’ll hear directly from these activists what keeps them grounded, what keeps them inspired, and how they are taking care of each other in these turbulent times.

CHOKE began as a now-defunct larger documentary about the history of activism in the United States, and now is refocusing that lens to shed light on the activism community and how to best allow them to tell their story. While the scope cannot possibly cover all types of activism, the common thread remains the impact of these stories for all activists and those allied with the work.
