The CHOKE team comes together with backgrounds in documentary film, journalism, theater, and stunt work. Our experiences - whether organizing protests against the Iraq War in high school, or feeling helpless in the face of police profiling/brutality in everyday interactions naturally push us to use art as a way to not only document the issues we see around us, but to use documentary as a force for education and change. We are motivated by honest, thought-provoking storytellers - such as Alvin Perlmutter, Barbara Kopple, Ben Proudfoot, Ntozake Shange, Alvin Ailey, or Frida Kahlo. Since 2020, anti-Black racism is being examined with an urgency that has not been seen in decades. We want to show that these issues remain urgent and are intrinsically connected to what is happening to our climate - and we believe in elevating the Black activists that are taking action in these spaces.
