Innovation Field Lab
A pedagogical approach to using film and video as a tool for qualitative data collection and analysis
A novel field-based and design-oriented research pedagogy that uses documentary filmmaking (the videographic essay or the video essay) in leadership, public policy and management courses at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. Courses include the Innovation Field Lab.
The Innovation Field Lab at Harvard Kennedy School provides students with hands-on experience tackling real-world public sector challenges. Working alongside Massachusetts municipalities, interdisciplinary student teams develop and test innovative solutions for complex civic issues. The program bridges academic learning and practical implementation while supporting local governments with limited resources. It also helps prepare the next generation of public leaders for community-centered problem solving.
Community Engagement through Filmmaking
Cecily also taught at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government an interdepartmental course ‘Community Engagement through Filmmaking’ and interdependent studies, ‘Reading and Research: The Video Essay’ during which students produced their own documentaries showing topics of social importance that they are passionate about,and illustrated the role of the visual media in promoting social change.
