Agnes Irwin 4th graders ask: How Can We Make the World a Better Place?

During the academic year 2021-22, docutribe™ partnered with the Agnes Irwin School, an independent school based in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The partnership was developed to provide opportunities for students to explore, create, collaborate, and share ideas in creative, innovative ways. In this case we worked with the 4th grade Agnes Irwin Lower School class to create short films about becoming social change makers via implemented Design Thinking concepts through the development of their film productions.

For the fourth graders, the initiative included completing a Thrively Strengths Assessment framework for students, which is designed to identify the individual strengths, interests, and aspirations of young learners. This year, the students were asked to leverage those strengths by working collaboratively to answer the guiding question: How can you help to make the world a better place?

This opportunity was made possible as a result of the generous support of the Agnes Irwin Parents’ Council. As well we would like to offer special thanks to the following members of the docutribe community: Patrick Lynch, Sarah Moore, Alexandra Siambekos, and Billy Wirasnik. In addition, a friend and supporter of the docutribe community, Julie Bridgham, joined us at the final 4th Grade Filmmakers festival to offer reflections, feedback and congratulations to the class of 2030!

Overall, we saw that docutribe’s mission coupled with Agnes Irwin School’s approach to teaching and learning built students’ capacities for collaboration, community engagement, and innovation.

At the end of this process, the students now better understand empathetic storytelling, the design thinking framework and are able to:

  • Identify areas of need in a community

  • Conduct empathy interviews

  • Identify a problem

  • Propose research-based, real-world solutions

  • Work collaboratively with a team on a central focus

  • Use technology to document the problem-solving process
